Sweet Romance with a touch of Spice?
Try Jacqueline and the Giant or the lovely stories in The Golden Apple and Other Stories.
Science Fiction?
How about Subject 82-42 or Drink My Soul...Please.
Fantasy?
The Portal Guards is fascinating, or the stories in Avast Ye, Airships! run the Steampunk gamut. :)
And if you like Horror, we have lots of titles to choose from
The Grotesquerie is an anthology by women writers of horror, and In the Bloodstream combines horror and dark fantasy.
2) Do you like to read series connected by theme?
Try the spicy romance of C.A.K.E. -- visit Death's Cafe or the witches of Toil, Trouble, and Tempation
3) What would you like to see more of?

Love and Death: A February Horror List
So I'm told that Valentines Day happened or something. I dunno, I kind of just let it walk on by as if I was hiding from a velociraptor in an abandoned restaurant kitchen and hope I don't get a chunk taken out of me, but to each their own.
However, although you can all relax because you don't have to be romantic for another whole year, I've decided to share my go-to list of movies and books that really get the heart pounding and the blood pumping.
Why yes I am sarcastic, why do you ask?
Seriously, whether you believe that a horror movie is a good date or a way to work out your bitter single aggression, love is a great topic for horror. Love is scary, yo. At any second, that person that you've just nuzzled and cuddled with in bed could roll over and knife you in the spleen. That's what intimacy is all about, folks, trusting and loving someone even though they could spleen-knife you at any given moment.
So in honor of that, here's my go-to Valentine's Day horror list:

Seriously, whether you believe that a horror movie is a good date or a way to work out your bitter single aggression, love is a great topic for horror. Love is scary, yo. At any second, that person that you've just nuzzled and cuddled with in bed could roll over and knife you in the spleen. That's what intimacy is all about, folks, trusting and loving someone even though they could spleen-knife you at any given moment.
So in honor of that, here's my go-to Valentine's Day horror list:
Movies
My
Bloody Valentine – Okay, this is like a given. Mining accidents, Valentine’s Day, and a killer on the loose –
sounds like a date night movie to me!
The
Lost Boys – The original vampire romance movie. Yes it is, no
arguments. Kick back and harken to a simpler time when boys met girls at
concerts, and the only thing they had to worry about was accidentally getting
hazed into a gang of bloodsuckers at the risk of potentially destroying their
own family. There’s something for everyone: comedic elements, vampire gore,
great music, nostalgia…plus, the vampires in this movie are kind of like the
boy band members of the same era: a type for everyone! Choose your favorite and
have your friends do the same – if your choices happen to clash, arm wrestle
until there’s a victor! Scream and throw things when they get killed off! Ignore the sequels because nothing will come close to the vampires in the original! Plus, this movie introduced the world to Cry
Little Sister, the get-it-on anthem for the undead.
Only Lovers Left Alive - A new addition to the list, and admittedly more horror-oriented than scary. This is more like vampire slice-of-life, though holy god, you guys, this is THE vampire romance movie. Just don't even think about Twilight. This is what the genre should be. Plus there is some carnage here and there, and it's worth it for Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, and the "She drank Ian!" quote. If you do want something actually romantic, this is your title. Plus, it's so gorgeous to look at and relaxing to watch, you'll thank me for forcing it into your life.
Shivers –
The movie for those who want a sexier type of holiday. This film centers on an
apartment complex where a parasite that causes uncontrollable lust is on the
loose. What chance does rational human logic stand when it’s up against the
type of attraction and passion that’s hardwired into the human condition?
Teeth –
Also for those who may want something sexier with a bite. Heh. The tale of a
girl with an interesting condition, it takes the journey from her devotion to
abstinence to discovering an odd sort of sexual awakening and power. Fun fact:
a lot of cultures have stories about uh, dental issues in southern regions, dating back hundreds of
years. Usually it’s a wizard or witch that afflicts the poor girl with the
condition, but those stories are always an interesting read.
May – The
classic tale of a girl who just wants to be loved, despite the fact that she’s
an outsider and the deck is stacked against her. A great film for those who are
feeling bitter about singlehood.
I
am Legend – The book ending is much better, but that’s not why it makes the
list. This is a GREAT movie for singles to watch, because hey, you think you’ve
got it bad? At least you’re not the only known human alive trying to survive in
a world filled with monsters. Now things don’t seem so bad, do they?
Friday
the 13th – The original is the best, and it may seem a little sideways
for a Valentine’s Day movie, but think of it. You don’t have anyone or you
don’t get to curl up with someone? Hey, look at what happens to those
wild teens that get with someone too fast! Again, now don’t you feel better?
Books
The
Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker – A cuddly novella that explores
relationships as much as it introduces us to those wacky Cenobites and their
puzzle box. What happens when a wife just isn’t feeling the spark between her
and her husband? Should she get counseling? File for divorce? Help resurrect
her former lover who’s caught in a hellish dimension of pain and pleasure by
killing people who are interested in her? Known for exploring the line between
pleasure and pain as well as introducing the world to what would become Hellraiser,
this book is a quick read and an interesting look into the dark nature of the
heart.
Cold
Turkey by Nancy A. Collins – We all know I love the Sonja Blue series.
For me, this is a fabulous look at how a dark vampire romance might actually go.
This has shown up as a short story and as part of one of the books in the main
trilogy, but it’s also nice to have it separately because it is one of the best events in that world. Sonja (a “living” vampire and slayer) begins getting
interested in Judd, a human, even though she’s usually careful to avoid too
much direct interaction with humans. And then The Other (her more
vampiric/demonic part) clicks into gear and takes an interest…you’ll have to
read to find out the rest. Like a lot of things on this list, not for the faint
of heart, but if you’re into vampires acting out, this is definitely for you.
The
Moth Diaries by Rachel Klein – Adolescence is a crazy age, especially
where friends are involved. This gets listed because it’s a great coming of age
story, and while there isn’t any romance per say, I think it really gives a
great look into how territorial girls are when it comes to their friends. Set
in a boarding school around the 50s-60s, the narrator gets suspicious of
Ernessa, the new girl who keeps to herself…except when she takes an interest in
the narrator’s best friend Lucy.
Good Neighbors by Holly Black: (Kin, Kith,
and Kind)
– The story of a (supposedly) mortal girl with faerie relatives and her fight to figure out
what she really is. There are also a lot of great subplots with her circle of
friends involving relationships. Would you magically control the guy you were
dating if you had the chance? If you knew he was cheating, would you sell your
soul and try to kill him? What if you thought you had a strong foundation and
found he was sneaking out to be fed from by water nymphs? There’s also an
interesting triangle between the lead character’s father, his best friend (a human
who was in love with him), and the faerie he ends up marrying because she was
there and hot. It's fascinating to see a lot of tried and true faerie happenings set in a modern universe, as well.
Misery by
Stephen King – The awesome tale about an uber-fan of an unfortunate writer.
What would you do if your favorite person was on your doorstep, and you found
out that they were ending the very thing that kept you going?
Carrie
by Stephen King – Another one for singles to feel vindicated by. An
awkward girl gets to go to her first high school dance and feel like she might
have a shot at a social life…until her psychic powers are awakened. Then she
gets the chance to flatten all of those who have made her life hell.
Granted, the list is dark and a little gruesome in places,
but since when is love neat and tidy? Sure, we may celebrate with roses and
teddy bears, but if you think of it, love is messy. Love has its own shadows. The heart has blood and ventricles and stuff. Love can tip people over the edge, unravel the rational, and destroy lives as much as it can save people. So if you’re
going to curl up with a book or a movie this month, why not do it
with a title that really explores what love is all about?
And hey, if you're feeling put out or sarcastic or just want a break from the flowers and hearts, this is a great way to take a moment to realize that life is pretty skippy compared to some of the alternatives.

Sexy is as sexy does
I've been contemplating what makes a person sexy. I've gotten a rush of inspiration that has seen me crafting contemporary romances that are short and sweet. Yet, I find myself with a particular conundrum when it comes to writing sexy characters in this genre of romance.
Let me explain. When I write paranormal romance I feel as if "sexy" is right out there in the open due to the nature of the character. If the person is outherwordly, their sex appeal can be tied in with that aspect of the character. A male wolf shifter can "prowl", "growl", and do a whole host of things that are indicative of his animal half that position him within the archetype of a sexy "alpha". My female characters can exhibit a type of sexuality that is more visceral than what I feel a regular mundane woman is allowed.
In a contemporary romance I feel I'm always working against what the preconceived notions of appropriate sexual expression is for the gender of my characters. I want the same sexy alpha for my hero that doesn't sprout fur and claws, without him appearing like a creepy batterer. I want a female heroine that owns her sexuality and exudes sex appeal without getting locked into the dreded "promiscuous" box that women of the "real" world often get put into.
I want sexy to not just be about the "sex" of the sex appeal. I want sexy to be about the witty mind and clever conversation of my characters. I want it to be that thing that is hard to describe but you instantly know it when you see it. I want it seems, the intangible quality that one experiences when all those factors come together without explanation or purpose. I want it all, in a finite amount of words, and I want it to be believable.
It's a large task, and I'll confess I'm missing my characters ability to flash a little fang, or have a growl of desire rumble up from their chest, but I'm determined to make this happen. After all, the norms can be damn sexy too.

I'm in the mood for love
I'm in the mood for love. I need some "Happy Ever Afters", witty dialogue, and sexy time. I'd like these things to be set in a contemporary world, that doesn't involve swords, claws, or fur. I want a smoking hot hero with a dry wit and clever mind. I want my heroine to mirror him in all of these attributes but have a special sparkle all her own.
I've started making a list of all of these needs and wants. Who knows, maybe I'll stop looking for what I need and write what I want.

Seven Questions with SJ: Alexandra Christian
Welcome back with another round of seven questions with Selah Janel! This month my victim is the lovely Alexandra Christian. I've known Lexxx for a while and am always in awe of how well she mixes romance with horror, erotica with smart characters, and sassy humor with everything. Here's what she had to say...
SJ: What author, living or dead, do you just want to punch in
the face and take their place? Who has so much talent that you just can't stand
it?
AC:Most definitely
Stephen King. If there was a demonic
force that would allow me to switch evil genius brains with him, I would be
hard pressed not to take him up on the offer.
King’s gift for description and characterization is something that I
both envy and strive for. He’s what I measure myself and other authors by. …but no pressure…
SJ: It’s your funeral, and the only thing people are talking
about is your writing. What kind of creative legacy do you hope you leave
behind?
AC: I would hope that
people would say that I brought legitimacy to the erotic romance genre. That my stories were not only sensual, but
also smart, funny and well-crafted.
SJ: Since you focus on erotica writers, do you think they're
perceived as being really down-and-dirty, or all y'all just human like the rest
of us?
AC: I think that there’s
this fantasy that all erotic writers are one of two things. Either we’re all these smoldering sexpots
that write fictionalized versions of our own sexual escapades OR that we’re all
crazy cat-ladies writing dirty books on our lunch breaks from our jobs at the
local library. I like to think that most
of us are like me: somewhere in
between. I am highly imaginative, sexy,
flirty, smart, classy, goofy and generally a nice girl. I think that if you write erotic romance or
erotica, it’s kind of your responsibility to act like an intelligent, classy
and talented author so that all of us will be taken seriously. I have witnessed an awful lot of authors who
put this “down and dirty” image out there and then get upset when they 1—get treated
like a bimbette who is writing garbage and 2—get disgusting propositions from
creepers on social media sites. If you
want to be taken seriously as an author then you have to project an image of
being a serious author.
SJ: If you were stranded on a desert island with three
characters you've written, who would you: 1. want around to help you survive 2.
want around to populate the island with 3. want around in case you need to
resort to cannibalism.
AC: Hmmm…. I think I’d
want Sascha from Beast of Burden to help me survive. She’s such a strong and ingenuous person that
I think she could help us slaughter animals for food and build a bamboo
hut. When I got ready to repopulate, I’m
not sure who I’d pick. I’ve written so
many sexy heroes that I’d be hard pressed to choose. Andre from the Strange Bedfellows
series and Seth from Sanguine Kiss are amazing lovers with their vampire
stamina, but of course, they wouldn’t be much good for repopulation. And then Jack Leannan from Second Skin
could help me spawn a race of Selkies that would take over the island. As for
resorting to cannibalism, Saraqael from my first novel, Hellsong, would
be the best choice. Duh—he’s an
angel. He’s got wings. He could fly us right outta there….
SJ:What genre do you really want to write in that you
haven't gotten a chance to yet?
AC: I’d really like a high
fantasy. Something straight out of Lord
of the Rings with elves and dwarves. I
think the world-building would be so much fun.
Of course, for me the hardest part would be keeping the romance out of
it…
SJ: What author do you feel is the hidden gem in the world
today?
AC: You, of course, Selah!
Seriously, I think that all of my writer friends are amazing talents that
haven’t been fully realized by the world just yet. I always gravitate toward people that are
incredibly talented storytellers. Tally
Johnson, Susan H. Roddey, Crymsyn Hart, Selah Janel, Stephen Zimmer and Lucy
Blue are among my favorite “unknowns.”
SJ: Why MMP? What's your favorite part about working with
them?
AC: I met the publisher at
MMP, Nicole Kurtz, at a convention a few years ago. She had such a clear vision about where she
wanted MMP to go and the types of authors she was looking for that I
immediately wanted to help her on the path to world domination. She had a great business plan that was about
being profitable for everyone, but also helping to nurture good authors. My favorite part about working with MMP so
far has been all of the wonderful people I’ve met who are so helpful and
supportive.

Movie Quotes
I am an unabashed movie queen. Let me correct that. I am an unabashed classic movie queen. Perhaps I'm
bit too old to appreciate the newer movies of today, but the movies that really MOVE me are the ones that have juicy, meaty stories that stay with me long after. I am not ashamed that I spend way too much time on the imdb.com message boards.
Certainly, however, I am no movie snob. I'm not above screening The Expendables 1 AND 2. I mean, a girl's got to have her fun, right? I couldn't possibly turn down the chance to see most of the major action stars of the 80s and 90s.
But I digress. Movie quotes. Let's take a look a look at some of my favorites and add some of your own in the comments, if you've a mind to. Do it, it'll be fun!
"I am big! It's the pictures that got small." Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) Sunset Boulevard, 1950 (One of the original divas.)
"You're gonna need a bigger boat." Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) Jaws, 1975 (This was an ad-lib, not in the orginal script)
"We rob banks." Clyde Barrow (Warren Beatty) Bonnie and Clyde, 1967
"Here's Johnny!" Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) The Shining, 1980 (This was an ad-lib, not in the original script.)
"You talkin' to me?" Travis Bickle (Robert DeNiro) Taxi Driver, 1976 (This was an ad-lib, not in the original script.)
"Fasten your seatbelts. It's going to be a bumpy night." Margo Channing (Bette Davis) All About Eve, 1950
"They call me Mister Tibbs!" Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier) In the Heat of the Night, 1967
"Is it safe?" Dr. Christian Szell (Laurence Olivier) Marathon Man, 1976 (This scene can really turn you off dentists.)
"Open the pod bay doors please, HAL." Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea) 2001: A Space Odyssey, 1968
"Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death!" Mame Dennis (Rosalind Russell) Auntie Mame, 1958 (This is so true!)
"Go ahead, make my day." Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) Sudden Impact, 1983 (Didn't care for the movie, but between the dog and this quote, it's barely tolerable.)
Don't be shy, put yours in the comments.

RaeLynn Blue Interview
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer? Like
most writers, I've been writing stories before I even could write letters, form
words, etc. I remember rewriting the ending of nursey rhymes or extending the
story line as far back as I can remember. So, I can't remember a time when I
wasn't writing.
How long does it take you to write a book? It depends on the book, but usually a short novella takes me roughly six months--on average to write.
How long does it take you to write a book? It depends on the book, but usually a short novella takes me roughly six months--on average to write.
What is your work schedule like when you're writing? If I'm lucky and the day job isn't a beast, I write straight through the chapters until the characters have nothing else to add or until my body gives out. Then, I go back and read what I have written, ask the characters if I have it down right, and proceed to the next chapter.
What would you say is your interesting writing quirk? My most interesting quirk? Probably that I like to go back over a chapter, adding in details, fleshing out the scene again and again before moving on to the next chapter. Oh! I also write everything out long hand, but that isn't really interesting.
Where do you get your information or ideas for your books? Life. People. My personal history. The person history of friends. Porn. Comics. Everything. I mean, I have written an entire novel based on water left on the road after an accident scene.
What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books? That it's hard. LOL!!
How many books have you written? Which is your favorite? To date, I have written 59 titles. My favorite one? Um, it would have to be, uh *looks over shoulder at mob of characters*...I will have to get back to you.
What do you think makes a good story? A good story is one in which the read can relate. A relatable and entertaining story is not an easy thing to create.
What quirks
(flaws) if any do your hero and heroines have? My heroes and heroines
are human and as such they succumb to all the things we do--lust, jealousy, insecurity and other human emotions.
Which of your books is your favorite? My favorite book is THE ONYX SCION. It's about lost destiny, love, mystery, and intrigue as well as sex in an urban fantasy sort of like Kim Harrison's stories.
Which of your characters is your favorite? My favorite character recently is Aerial from ICING ON THE CAKE. She's a funny, smart, self confident woman and her fierce love for Brice is encouraging.
What would your ideal career be, if you couldn't be an author? My ideal career if I couldn't write? English teacher.
Have you ever been surprised by a controversy among fans or reviewers - for example, you created a character without thinking too much about what people would think of him, and found some readers loved him and some hated him? I have found that in my story, WASABI HEAT, a few readers didn't feel I was being true to my heroine, but I was. There was a lot of volley between readers about whether or not a "real" African American would behave like my heroine did. It took me completely by surprise.
Where can

What TV shows
do you watch? I love NCIS, The Walking Dead and The First 48. I know, I
know, none of those are romantic...
Tell us five
things about you, that we wouldn't know. Whew. Okay. Here I go....
1. I'm only five feet tall.
2. I do not eat chocolate.
3. I'm asthmatic
4. I love cats.
5. I can change
a tire.

Blurb: While
recreational shopping, Jewel Isles and her friends discover all kinds of deals
and steals at the Atlanta Shoe and Purse Expo. When Jewel heads to the ladies
room, she nearly trips over a geeky, but surprisingly handsome man.
Ben Wook Sun, NASA scientist and Star Trek® lover, didn’t understand why beautiful women like Jewel Isles insisted on dating men who lacked intellectual depth. Adjusting his black-rimmed glasses, Ben made the conscious decision to convince Jewel that he was the best for her—period. It didn’t take a muscle-bound brute to scoop her up and whisk her away. He was more than capable.
But first, he had to get her to go out on a date with him. Astrophysics, this wasn’t.

Excerpt:
“Good one,
Anderson!” Ben shouted back and rolled his eyes. He tapped the rim of his shot
glass. “One more, please.”
The bartender nodded. He refilled Ben’s tequila and sloshed it a bit.
“Hey!” shouted Race, his fellow scientist.
The bartender, a big beefy man with a lot of facial hair growled at Race. “Shut that hole, nerd.”
“Yeah, well, your momma!” Race shouted back.
“Race!” Ben snatched the wiry scientist by the collar and out of the bartender’s face. He said to the hunk of ancient human DNA serving drinks. “Ignore him. He’s had a lot to drink.”
“I could’ve handled it,” slurred Race, hiccupping to punctuate the sentence. Unfocused eyes roamed all over the place.
“I think you need to be cut off. You’ve had way too much,” Ben said.
“Whoa!” Race ignored Ben’s advice and fell to the floor, banging into a few of the other scientists. They yelled at him, but quickly went back to chatting about whatever suited their fancies. Race clamored, clumsily rising to a standing position.
With eyes wide, Race said to Ben. “Did you see them?”
Ben followed Race’s blatant stare to a trio of women who strolled into the restaurant. The scent of floral and expensive perfumes still lingered on the otherwise stale air. Sun-kissed skin, strappy sandals, and long cinnamon-toned legs dressed in brightly colored sundresses. Goodness, he loved summer. Oversized sunglasses pushed into shiny, full hair completed what Ben could only describe as beauty dipped in sunlight.
No wonder Race fell over.
“I do now,” Ben said and reached over to close Race’s gaping mouth. “Good call.”
“Damn. That’s one hot rocket, huh? I’d like to launch her blasters,” Race commented.
“Which one?”
“The one in blue,” Race said.
“Yeah.”
“Wookie, those women are gorgeous, like that BeyoncĂ©. African-American women are so gorgeous. Stunning. The one in the pretty blue, she could launch my rocket.”
“Kill the rocket jokes,” Ben said, hearing Race’s slur on the s.
Ben saw her. The average pronoun couldn’t even begin to convey the extraordinary woman in red. He wiped his hands across his khakis. Red had been a good choice because she was a firecracker. Cinnamon brushed legs went on forever. Ben’s heart actually skipped a beat. Then another. Could be the tequila.
The woman’s ka-pow landed a huge wallop on him.
“Wow,” Race said again.
“Those kinds of women are all about money,” Ben countered.
Race shrugged. “We got money, well, except for Thomas, but his ex-wife took half.”
Ben tossed back the dark amber liquid. The shock of the burn acted like lightning. More awake, he tried to blink back the weary vision. No doubt. He’d had way too much to drink. Probably shouldn’t have started with beer. No. He should’ve stuck to beer.
“Yeah, we have money, but women like them don’t date guys like us.”
“We’re not some other species, though that didn’t hurt Captain Kirk’s chances at all,” Race countered.
Ben nodded.
He could do complex equations in his head, but he’d never understand why woman wanted dumb mates. All brawn, but no brains. Ben shook his head.
“Brad Pitt we aren’t, Race.”
Race’s expression fell. “Yeah.”
Their moods sobered, Ben pushed back from the bar, rotating the stool around and putting his back to the bartender.
“Look, I’m going to hit the sack. I’ve got that panel at 8 a.m. on Astrodynamics.”
Race’s unfocused eyes met his, but then slid back to the women sitting in a booth. Only the tops of their heads could be seen from his position now, but one of the women, dressed in a scarlet red dress, held his attention. Even if the only thing he could see was the top of her curly ponytail.
“Yeah, sure? I’m on the same one, so call me to wake me up,” Race said, or that’s what Ben thought he said. “Will you, Wookie?”
“I’m not your mother. Get a wakeup call.”
With that, Ben clapped Race on the shoulder, threw a fifty on the bar, nodded to the bartender to keep the change, and headed out of the restaurant and out of the thundering noise of the television, the shrieks of drunken laughter, and the roars of multiple conversations. The world spun sluggishly. Steadying himself by using the wooden stools and his co-workers’ shoulders, Ben made his way toward the exit. Race had been pulled into the circle of remaining associates at the bar. Ben heard him lamenting the loss of an old computer, a Commodore 64, his mom threw out two decades ago. Frowning at the lot of them, Ben realized no one would be at his panel. They’d all be hung over.
He smirked.
That was if he made it.
Most of his coworkers could talk about any aspects of rocket science in their sleep. World experts, most of his friends had a life of lecture, academia, and books. Few married. When they did, Thomas happened. A woman would divorce him because she couldn’t compete with being married to one of the world’s smartest men. At 36, Ben had a lot of life left. Sure, not all the scientists were male. Quite a few of the most brilliant minds on the planet were women. So, he had his flings, but those faded fast, dissolved by the acidic strength of competition. He didn’t date other scientists any more.
“Hey, Wookie!” Race shouted.
Ben turned and the step that should’ve been there suddenly wasn’t, and he fell. His glasses clattered against the tile and out of reach. Everything blurred without his glasses and all he could make out of the fuzzy blobs were shades of scarlet and nutmeg.
Then, a heavenly voice, tinted with a sexy husk, asked, “Did that guy just call you a wookiee?”
The bartender nodded. He refilled Ben’s tequila and sloshed it a bit.
“Hey!” shouted Race, his fellow scientist.

Five Ways to Change Your Life...Right Now
![]() |
| freedigitalphotos.net |
"C'mon
turn, turn this thing around
Right
now
It's
your tomorrow
Right
now."
- Van Halen, Right Now
Everyone gets stuck in a rut. You might be in a rut right now. Though I may not know your specific
situation, I know that moaning and groaning about it isn't going to help
anything change. Change comes from
you.
It's easy to change your life...and
you can do it anytime, anywhere.
1. Eat the dirt cake - in small
bites.
If I were a superhero, my nemesis would be a messy house. With three little ones and a dog, who are all
totally cool, the house is never, ever clean.
There's spills, there's dog hair, there's ...something on the kitchen
floor.
By the time I bundle them off to school, all I want to do is
have a cup of coffee and write. But I
can't do that or else I'd be sledding out of the kitchen on dishes. So, I promise myself five minutes in the
kitchen.
Not as fun as seven
minutes in the closet, but it's amazing what I can accomplish in that small
window of time. Sometimes (only
sometimes) I set the timer for another five minutes to see if I can top what I
did in the first five minutes. By doing
this, I'm not overwhelmed by a dirty kitchen
and it's a bit of a challenge.
2. Appreciate the small
things in life.
Too many times we look for large "things" to make
us happy. How about appreciating that
great cup of coffee, a fragrant breeze or just the time to sit and hear your
own thoughts. Don't be too busy to take
the time to smell the roses, or dark roast. I'm fortunate enough to have birds hang out
around my deck, and many times I'll spot a lovely bluejay or a robin. One time I saw a beautiful red headed
woodpecker!
3. Stop reliving the past.
See what Van Halen says? (Because I always turn to them for
advice.) It's YOUR tomorrow. Grab it, make use of it. Turn your face toward the future, stop mulling
over "what could have been". All of us have something to let go of. Let it go.
4. Raise your Awareness
After you finish reading this blog post (smile) sit back and
close your eyes . What do you hear? How do your clothes feel against your
body? How does it feel to breathe deep,
really deep? What do you smell?
Take sixty seconds to be fully aware. Feel, hear, smell, look outside (if you
can). Really sense what is going on in
the world around you. You might be
surprised at what you experience.
5. See yourself in others.
We are all human and have faults. We're not perfect. So when we see something we don't like or
agree with, we do tend to point fingers and judge. Having been a teacher for years and seeing
parents come and go, I know how easy it is to do. But before you point those fingers, can you
see yourself in this person? If so, step
away, keep the bitter, blaming words back.
Give someone a break. They may
have the occasion to do the same for you in the future.
Choose change!
