An Interview with Andre deBeaumanoir, vampire.

Andre, thanks for coming with me to the Mocha Memoirs blog. We have a couple questions we’d like you to share with our readers:

1.       It’s a big rumor that vampires don’t like summer.  Is that true?

 

Well as any Goth kid could tell you, wearing all black in the summertime is pretty uncomfortable.  Over the years I’ve learned to cope: linen shirts rather than cotton, midnight skinny dipping in the pool, and of course sunglasses are always most fashionable during the summer months.

2.        Tell us about your most current adventure.

I’m a star of the Strange Bedfellows series written by Alexandra Christian.  In the last adventure, our damsel in distress took us into the afterlife to rescue the spirit of her dead husband.  We ended up contracting the services of a rather dubious necromancer, a Grim Reaper and a golem.  The story ended on quite a cliffhanger, but no worries—the next installment is due out this year.  I’ll be going into Hell to rescue my human lover from the clutches of the afore mentioned sexy necromancer. 

 3.       What is your most favorite thing to do? Or, do you have a super power?

I’m afraid that my favorite thing to do is something I’m not sure I can discuss on a public blog (wiggling eyebrows), but I’m quite certain you could guess.  I suppose that could also be counted among my super powers…

Keeping Things In Perspective

I've been having a bit of a rough time of it lately. Too many rejections at one time have left me feeling a bit weary. I even had three rejections in one day. Talk about laying it on thick! Three people bought my books and returned them only a day or two later presumably after reading them. These returns occurred within one week. I feel like I've been robbed. I understand this return business is a bigger problem with erotica and erotic romances than with other genres. Menopause is wearing me down. It's sweltering outside and I don't do well in excessive heat. I'm adopted and I just found my natural mother - but she died a couple of years ago. I barely missed her, and I'm kicking myself I didn't start this search sooner. Another lost opportunity. When one disappointment after another leave me wanting to unload on a shrink, I figured it's time to take a life assessment.

Things aren't really all that bad. It depends on how I look at them. The best thing for me to do to get outside my spinning head is to focus outward.

* I walk on the beach regularly, especially in the mornings before the oppressive heat (for Massachusetts, LOL) gets underway. I often set my fiction on the ocean, so seeing the churning waves and hearing the surf crash reminds me of what I need to write. Plus those long ocean walks are great for plot planning and brainstorming.

* I help things grow, namely plants. Tending to a garden and watching it thrive gives me a sense of accomplishment. This year, I've successfully grown plants from seeds for the first time after years of failure. That's quite a feather in my cap, and I will bask in my success.

* I have a loving husband and a fantastic son. Lots of people don't have familial support, and I do. I'm very grateful for that.

* I am owned by four cats who won't put up with my bullshit moods. They want feeding and petting, and nothing will stop them. LOL

* I have supportive friends online and colleagues who enjoy watching me succeed. There is no schadenfreude coming from anyone in my life, and I like it that way.

* My natural mother may be deceased, but her niece (my cousin) wants to talk to me. So I may finally meet someone I'm actually related to by blood. I wonder if we look alike? I'll find out in a few weeks.

* Today, I'm meeting a Facebook writer friend at Readercon in Massachusetts. I've known him online for a few years, and this is the first time we'll meet in meatspace. I'm very excited about it! He's from the southwest, and my husband and I are taking him out for a typical New England meal of lobstah and clam chowdah (if he wants it). Our treat. Such fun!

Sometimes I need a swift kick in the shorts to get out of a blue funk. As the old Oscar Wilde saying goes, we are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.

Feeling Peevish

Greetings, noble readers!  Or should that be "nubile" readers?  Anyway, it's time for another sit down with yer old pal, Lexxx.  If you don't know me by now, I'm the writer of the Strange Bedfellows series from Mocha Memoirs Press as well as other various and sundry scribblings.  But today I'm blogging not as a writer, but as a reader.  It's true-- one cannot be an effective writer if they are not first and foremost-- an avid reader.  Strangely, what I read for pleasure is a little different from what I write.  I'm more of a horror girl.  I like the blood and violence; the spooky paranormal atmosphere.  For me a book is best when I have to put it in the freezer to get to sleep at night.  But I digress. The pet peeves I have as a reader transcend all genres.  Call me a grammar Nazi if you must, but there are many things that will immediately make me put a book down.

1.  Poor grammar.  If you're an author who gets paid for what you write, then you should have a good grasp of the English language (or whatever tongue you happen to write in).  An editor should not have to remind you about capital letters, punctuation, it's/ its or using an apostrophe s for a plural.  Oh, and nothing gets my back up worse than a disregard for subject/ verb agreement.  I've found myself participating in conversations on writer mailing lists detailing lessons on basic grammar.  Here's a news flash, publishers-- if the author doing the submission is making glaring grammatical errors, then they aren't ready to publish.  If the story is so good that grammar doesn't matter, that's what the "revise and resubmit" letters are for.  That's not to say that we all don't make mistakes, but a disregard for grammar diminishes us all.

2.  Ignoring plot points in favor of more sex.  I've been writing in the romance genre for a while now and I've noticed that in a lot of instances, romance writers get slammed for writing "fluff."  We get accused of having weak plots that center on sex and lovey-dovey drivel.  For the most part, this is a slippery-slope arguement that has no basis in reality (i.e.-- bullshit).  However, I have been the "victim" of a PWP-- a porn without plot.  And if that's what you're looking for, that's great.  More power to you, but that's just not my thing.  I like romance novels that center on the relationship between the lovers, but that also have an intricate, interesting plot woven into it.  After all, there's only so many ways that the characters can get it on. After a while, there has to be something more if it's to hold my interest. 

3.  Insulting the intelligence of the reader.  Romance readers often get a bad rap.  Actually, genre-readers often get a bad rap.  It is as if the world thinks that anyone who reads horror, romance, sci-fi, fantasy, etc. are adorable little morons.  I can't tell you how many times I've had complicated sentence structure or vocabulary edited out of a story.  One of my biggest peeves is the myth of "head hopping."  Writers are often not allowed to write in third-person omniscient POV nowadays because we're all so scared of confusing the reader.  I, for one, would like to think that my readers are intelligent folk who have no trouble following the points of view of the characters.  As a reader, I enjoy varied and complex sentence structure and vocabulary that ignites the senses.  That's not to say it should be pretentious, but you know what I mean...

My Birthday Is Thursday - Time For An Assessment

Hi, there. My name is E. A. Black, and my birthday is in three days. March 14.

It's also Steak and BJ Day. Oh, joy.

I normally assess my life progress around New Year's Day but the panic really sets in on my birthday. Thursday is also Steak and BJ Day. Steak and BJ Day is the dude's answer to Valentine's Day. Guys who put out for chocolates, fancy dinners, and flowers on Valentine's Day demand payback exactly one month later. They want steak. BJs. Toss in some beer. . . They're easy to please

A month later, on April 14, is Cake and Cunnilingus Day. Women had to have the last laugh.

Since I'm fortunate enough to have my birthday fall on Steak and BJ Day, I can't help but think about my sex writing. I have one story with Mocha Memoirs Press called "Alicia". That one is a short romantic horror story. Most of what I've written is erotica, erotic romance, and non-fiction sex articles.

Yes, I make my living writing smut. :)

"Alicia" is sort of related to this writing in that it's a sweet (albeit dark) romance. "Sweet" means "no sex". You won't find my characters doing the backseat Mambo in that particular story. You'll find explicit sex in my other short stories, novels, and novellas. My question for myself on my birthday is this:  Do I want to continue writing erotic fiction and non-fiction?

Yes, but I want to expand. My horror has been getting published over the past year. "Alicia" was one of the first stories, published October, 2012. I got the idea from an episode of "Medium". Remember that old TV show, starring Patricia Arquette? Alicia is a young, kind woman whose abusive husband regularly beats her to a bloody pulp. She's trying to get out of the marriage intact. Her good friend Eric - who is in love with her - comes to her rescue when she flees home in the middle of the night. But things are not what they seem, as always is the case in stories like this one. Here's a brief excerpt:

 Eric stepped out of the shower and a foul stench—mingled with the crisp peppermint of his shampoo—smacked him in the face and left a coppery taste in the back of his throat. His stomach heaved. Confused, he looked around the room to figure out where the smell came from, but he couldn't pinpoint it. Dread clung to him, dark and sticky, ruining his relaxed mood. The light bulbs over the sink hummed, casting harsh yellow light about the room. He shaded his eyes against the glare, trying to see. 

Why were those lights so bright? Something was terribly wrong in his peaceful world, and not knowing what it was frightened him.

His wife Alicia brushed her teeth as if nothing was unusual, while the stink of rot lurked beneath the cool mint of his shampoo. Why didn't she notice the smell? 

He leaned towards her to place his hand on her shoulder, and she turned her face towards his for a kiss on the cheek. Ugly, purple bruises darkened her eyes. He pulled away, repulsed and alarmed, not quite sure what he was seeing. One side of her face had swelled to a dark mask, not unlike a pumpkin that had been left outside in the damp earth to rot. An angry red welt encircled her throat like a bloody ribbon wrapped around her neck. Frightened, he reached out one hand but he couldn't bring himself to touch her swollen face. Touching her would make the vision real and it couldn't be real. 

Alicia spat in the sink. Two of her teeth bounced against the porcelain. Blood tainted the paste. 

"The girls are running late again." Alicia's bloodied mouth leaked crimson and white toothpaste. Why did she act as if nothing strange was going on? He gaped at her, not understanding what was happening. The safety of his home evaporated as she spoke with her raw, torn mouth. "Make them wolf down their cereal, and toss them out of the house before they miss the bus."

"Alicia, who did this to you?" Eric asked. She did not answer him. She brushed her teeth, running the brush over her ragged gums where the teeth had been knocked out. His stomach heaved again, and he swallowed hard to keep from vomiting. He wanted to knock out the teeth of whoever had assaulted her, but she acted as if nothing was wrong. Why?

The phone rang. Who would be calling him at this hour? It wasn't even 7:30 yet. He asked Alicia again who had done this to her, but she didn't answer him. She dried her torn mouth, and then she smeared foundation over her face. To his horror, the foundation did not cover her bruises. It only made them look uglier and even more purple.

Eric walked to the phone and answered it.

"Hello?"

The phone continued to ring. Eric's steam-hazy mind knew that that wasn't supposed to happen.

"Hello?"

Eric woke up in bed to the ringing of the telephone on the dresser next to him. His wife, Carol, stirred at his side.

Things only get worse from that point on.

This year, in honor of my birthday, I plan to achieve the following:

1. Finish my erotic novel "Alex Craig Has A Threesome".

2. Finish my horror novel "Hell Time".

3. Walk on the beach more often this spring, summer, and fall.

4. Publish more erotic fairy tales.

5. Do more book readings.

Being born on Steak and BJ Day makes me think about sex and writing. I have my work cut out for me this year.
